OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

  • Oklahoma State University was founded on December 25, 1890, as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, just twenty months after the Land Run of 1889. When the first students assembled for class on December 14, 1891, there were no buildings, no books, and no curriculum.

  • Today, OSU has a 1.5 million volume library, modern research laboratories and equipment, excellent physical education, recreation and student union facilities, nationally-recognized residence halls programs, and outstanding cultural events, all of which provide a stimulating educational and social environment for its student body of  almost 21,000.
  • Formally established in 1909, the School of Architecture at Oklahoma State University is one of the older, most respected programs in the nation. As one of the premier professional schools of the University, we have long been recognized as a top academic program in the country by professionals, educators, and the public. This tradition of excellence can be attributed to eager, hardworking students, a focused and dedicated faculty, and strong support from the University and alumni.
  • While the early student body traveled to Stillwater by horse and buggy to enter a high quality program, today's students travel from all parts of the world to participate in a program which has gained both national and international stature. OSU's winning record in national and international student design competitions is rivaled by no other school of its size and is among the top schools of any size in the country. Our graduates have consistently been recruited and employed by the best firms throughout the nation, rapidly rising to positions of leadership and distinction.

  • The School of Architecture is located in the original university Gymnasium and Armory, constructed in 1918.  The building, currently known as the Architecture Building, was renovated in 1977 to accommodate the physical requirements of the School.  The result of this restoration and reuse is a carefully planned facility which includes all space requirements, furniture and equipment necessary for study.
  • In addition to the administrative and faculty offices, classrooms and seminar spaces, architectural and architectural engineering studios, the building also houses a gallery, computer center, computer-based studio, and architectural library.
  • The Architecture Building is set within the larger context of the University, a well landscaped and people-oriented campus plan with buildings in the Georgian style, that has managed to maintain a clear and coherent image throughout its history.  The city of Stillwater, currently with a a population of approximately 40,000 residents, is located sixty-five miles form each of the state's major metropolitan centers, Tulsa and Oklahoma City.  This proximity allows access to many urban advantages, but also permits the personal attention, focus and identity only available in a smaller community like Stillwater - unusual for a University of approximately 20,000 students!
