The OSU Architectural Engineering Program offers a five year ABET accredited Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree and a one year post-professional Master of Architectural Engineering degree.

The Bachelor of Architectural Engineering program’s primary objective is to provide basic and professional education to engineering students primarily in building-related structural engineering. We endeavor to produce graduates who possess broad-based knowledge, skills, and judgment that will prepare them to succeed in the profession of architectural engineering or in further studies at the graduate level. The program is designed to prepare the student to contribute to society as a professional engineer dealing with analysis, design, and related activities within the construction industry. Further, the program seeks to utilize the broad resources of the University, to exploit a close relationship with the architectural program and to provide in-depth understanding of the professional field and a sensitivity to other less technical concerns related to the building environment faced by architectural engineers.

While the primary focus of the Architectural Engineering program is the safe and economical design of structural systems used in buildings, our students are also exposed to the basic engineering principals of environmental control systems.

Our program is fortunate to share space, equipment, other facilities, faculty, and many common courses with the Architecture Program. Our students graduate with an understanding of problems faced by architects with whom they are closely associated in professional practice.

Program outcomes describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation.  The architectural engineering program has adopted the following program outcomes:

(a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
(b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
(c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.
(d) an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
(e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
(f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
(g) an ability to communicate effectively.
(h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
(i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
(j) a knowledge of contemporary issues.
(k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

In addition, the following long-term educational objectives have been developed.  These educational objectives are expected accomplishments of the majority of graduates a few years after graduation.  These graduates:

A.        Will have a basic education in building-related structural engineering.
B.        Will have a professional education in building-related structural engineering.
C.        Will possess broad-based knowledge, skills, and judgment in the profession of architectural engineering.
D.        Will contribute to society as professional engineers dealing with analysis, design, and related activities within the construction industry.
E.         Will have utilized the broad resources of the University.
F.         Will have exploited the close relationship with the architecture program.
G.        Will have an in-depth understanding of the professional field.
H.        Will have a sensitivity to other less technical concerns related to the building environment faced by architectural engineers.
I.          Will have a professional education that will prepare them to engage in the private practice of architectural engineering as a licensed engineer.
J.          Will have a sensitivity to human needs.
K.        Will have a genuine concern for quality, integrity and high ideals, a positive attitude for life-long learning, and an appreciation for their own self-esteem.
