Although no official rating systems exist for schools of
architecture, OSU has long been considered one of the outstanding schools of architecture.
In architectural design, student competitions are held nationally each year. OSU
Architecture students have won and placed in many of these competitions. In fact,
the OSU School of Architecture has one of the several best success records in these
competitions. Graduates from Oklahoma State have assumed leadership positions in some of the most highly regarded firms, not only in the southwest, but from coast to coast and internationally. Further, many OSU graduates have gone on to become senior faculty and Deans/Heads at other outstanding Schools of Architecture. Architectural Engineering and the technical aspects of architecture are equally well reputed. Architectural Engineering has long been known as one of the finest programs of its kind in the nation. OSU graduates from this curriculum have participated in the design of such structures as the Astrodome, the Superdome, Texas Stadium, and many other innovative structures. Methods of Achieving QualityAs a relatively small school, with a relatively restricted budget, the School of Architecture has established several policies which assist in achieving the quality of professional education which the School believes each student deserves. The first of these is that the School has identified itself as an institution which assists its students in preparing for a career as architects and architectural engineers in private practice. Many other important roles are available for architecture students beyond private practice. Students whose career goals are urban design, urban planning, government service, or the many non-traditional roles tangential to the private practice of architecture are encouraged and assisted in transferring to other schools better equipped to meet their individual needs. |
Further, to facilitate quality professional education, the School has chosen to limit all core architectural course offerings to that semester appropriate for "in-sequence" students. This enables the School to allocate appropriate levels of faculty resources to the majority of students.

Controlled Enrollment PolicyAs a state institution, our freshman enrollment is open to all students qualified for university admission. Any student who qualifies for admission to Oklahoma State University may begin the sequence of architectural courses contained in the freshman and sophomore years of the curricula. However, probably because of the reputation of the School and the opportunities available in the professions of architecture and architectural engineering, more students wish to study at this School than faculty and facilities will support. In an effort to maintain the most effective balance between students, faculty and facilities, the faculty reviews and selects the forty five (30 in Architecture and 15 in Architectural Engineering) most qualified candidates based upon academic achievement and professional potential for admission to the upper division (Third Year) of the professional program. Since the Third Year of the curricula consists largely of a sequence of courses only offered once per year and beginning in the fall semester, applications for admission to Third Year are only accepted during each spring semester. The admission process occurs in late May each year for admission for the fall semester. In addition, there may be an admission process administered for the first design studio, ARCH 1216 if enrollment warrants it.
