FACULTY UPDATES
Moh Bilbeisi had two papers published this last year; “Three Notions of Beauty in Islamic Architecture” at the 2005 Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities, and “Fountain Pen: the silent grapic partner.” in the Journal of the Design Communication Association. He also served as a juror for the national ACSA Faculty Design Award Program.
Suzanne Bilbeisi was an invited speaker at the AIA/AIAS/NCARB/ACSA 2005 Internship Summit. She continues her role in mentoring young people considering careers in architecture and architectural engineering through OSU’s Grandparent University. She also serves as a member of OSU’s Faculty Council.
David Hanser completed his book “Architecture of France” and also wrote a review of “Prairie Skyscraper, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Price Tower” for the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. David will be on sabbatical during the fall 2006 semester studying Cistercian Architecture in France.
Jeanne Homer had two papers published this year; “Integrating Architecture and Structural Design in the Comprehensive Design Studio” at the AEI Architectural Engineering Conference and “The Architectural Engineering Student Experience of Comprehensive Design Studio” at the ASEE Annual Conference. She also did a competition project with Paolo Sanza, “Water Tanks: The Chicago Prize Competition”, which was displayed in Chicago. She is currently working on editing a revision of “Firmitas, Utilitas, and Venustas” and also on a book with Randy Seitsinger and Arne Henderson on the Architecture of Oklahoma.
Nigel Jones completed his book on the “Architecture of England, Scotland and Wales.” He also has completed a new residence in Stillwater for a retired OSU professor and helped OSU write the accreditation report for their recent NCA-HCL accreditation visit.
Tom Jordan has been active in campus politics, serving as past President of the CEAT Faculty Council and as a member of the OSU Faculty Council. Tom continues to keep the school’s computer systems up and running!
Khaled Mansy (co-PI) received $24,000 for a new NSF grant for the Tallgrass Prairie Ecological Research Station. He also continues work on his NSF funded Daylighting Lab. He had two papers published this last year; “Sustainable Architecture…. Is It a New Style” with Jeff Williams for the 22nd International Conference on Passive and Low-Energy Architecture and “Electronically Controlled Artificial Sky Dome @ OSU” with Steve O’Hara, Tom Gedra, and Qamar Arsaln for the ASEE Annual Conference.
Steve O’Hara worked closely with Mansy on the design of the artifical skydome for the new daylighting lab and also published the paper listed above with Mansy and colleagues.
Taka Okuda continues work on a paper entitled “Vision of Benton MacKaye: Toward Regionalism and Environmentalism from the 1910’s through the 1960’s in the United States” which should be ready for publication this year. He just returned from Korea where he helped architecture faculty there understand the teaching methodologies of our School of Architecture.
John Phillips published “Assessing the Comprehensive Design Studio Course through Alternate Methods” at the ASEE Annual Convention and also serves as the Program Chair for the Architectural Engineering division of ASEE.
Michael Rabens continues work on his book on Jules Hardouin-Mansart and also on a paper on the Chateau of Chambord. He also recently presented a paper on Chicago housing types.
Mike Richards published three papers this year; “Papering over the Cracks” at the National Conference on the Beginning Design Student, “Reconfiguring the Cartography of Impermanence” and “Pop-Up” with Amy Thigpen at the Hawaii International Confernce on Arts and Humanities.
Paolo Sanza published a paper entitled “digital windows” at the Sigradi 05 International Conference in Lima, Peru. He also participated in the Water Tanks of Chicago Idea competition with Jeanne Homer and continues involvement in active practice with his wife Awilda in Phoenix.
Randy Seitsinger was an invited speaker at the NCARB West Central Regional conference and was an invited participant in the recent AIA Integrated Practice Workshop in Chicago. He has been a key player in the design of the new Donald W. Reynolds School of Architecture Building project.
Tom Spector published three papers this year; “How Well do Architects’ Codes and Regulations Protect the Public?” in the Harvard Design Magazine, “Does the Sustainability Movement in Architecture Sustain a Sustainable Design Ethic” for Environmental Ethics, and “Architecture and Ethics of Authenticity” at the ACSA Annual Meeting. He also contributed a chapter entitled “Codes of Ethics and Coercion” in Nick Ray’s book “Architecture and its Ethical Dilemmas.” In addition, Tom reviewed “The Pragmatist Imagination: Thinking About Things in the Making” for the Contemporary Pragmatism and “The Culture of the New Capitalism” by Richard Sennett for Building Research and Innovation.
Tom is also serving as President of the NCOC/AIA and as a board member of AIAOklahoma.
John Womack completed his book “Once Upon a Highway, Route 66 in Oklahoma” and has started on a new book continuing his research on Oklahoma architecture. He also has maintained an active architectural practice, working on houses in New York and Arkansas. In addition, John continues to be recognized for his outstanding watercolors. He also serves as a member of CEAT’s Faculty Council.
In addition to his collaboration with Khaled Mansy on their paper, Jeff Williams has maintained an active role in practice. He consulted with Studio Architecture on the AIAOklahoma Honor Award winning Oklahoma River Masterplan project and is a key player in the design of our new Donald W. Reynolds School of Architecture Building project.
It should also be noted that several OSU Faculty members have played a key role in the OSU Masterplanning process including Nigel Jones, Suzanne Bilbeisi, Moh Bilbeisi, Alan Brunken, Jeff Williams, and Randy Seitsinger.
