PROJECT GOALS |
|
Overarching Goals:
· Develop a new and renovated facility for the School of Architecture at Oklahoma State University that remains a single entity.
· Provide an addition that complements the existing School of Architecture building, while respecting its character (scale, proportion, detail, materiality, etc). The new and renovated facility must project a strong statement of timeless architecture for the school. Additionally, the new and renovated facility as a whole must be of a level of quality appropriate for an institution of higher learning.
· Design the renovation and addition address the Masterplan for the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology Quadrant of campus.
· Develop the project and its environs in response to, and as an improvement upon, the current campus planning and circulation. Landscaping must be developed to minimize the impact of the surrounding parking lots.
· Provide a stimulating interior environment that enhances the student experience and facilitates quality educational programs. The facility must reflect a commitment to our design philosophy, to aid in the recruitment of high quality students and faculty.
· Create a total environment that invites OSU students and alumni into the school - to learn about architecture. The building must become a space for people to go through, not around.
Programmatic Goals:
· Maintain an open studio environment for the learning of architecture and architectural engineering, to promote serendipitous learning across class lines.
· Provide a dedicated workspace for every student in the pre-professional and professional studios, in both the architecture and architectural engineering programs.
· Allow the entire building to remain a ‘teaching tool’ about architecture.
· Capitalize upon the unique relationship between architecture and architectural engineering programs by allowing the respective student bodies to co-exist in close proximity.
· Provide a facility which functions well for the school’s various user groups (OSU students and alumni, School of Architecture students and faculty, and maintenance/support personnel).
· Provide a facility that is flexible and can adapt to future requirements. In particular, the studio layout (in bays) must allow maximum flexibility for the changing requirements of each semester.
· Maintain security for the studios and other private functions of the School during evenings and on weekends. The entire building will be unlocked from 8am-5pm on weekdays, but on weekends the commons area and architecture library will need to be accessed by the public, while the studios (as a whole, not one from the other) remain secured but with 24-hour access for the School of Architecture students.
· Provide space for the Architecture Library to continue to serve OSU students and students of the School of Architecture, located adjacent to the design studios.
· Provide an administrative compound that accommodates the entire faculty and staff, to allow for valuable interaction and coordination between the members.
· Design a facility that is environmentally responsible. The architecture should be sustainable and designed to age gracefully, as well as being energy efficient.
· Compose a finish palette of practical, durable materials for the working studio environment. The palette must contain high quality finishes where appropriate as well.
· Limit the amount of time the students and faculty will need to vacate the present building for the renovation and addition project. |
